Aberdeen were victorious in their Europa League opener, beating RoPS Rovaniemi 2-1 at Pittodrie. Two big positives for Aberdeen were the performances of new summer signings Ryan Hedges and Jon Gallagher.
Gallagher has arrived on loan from Atlanta United whilst Hedges comes from Barnsley. The Ex-Tyke’s winger played on the left flank, whilst Gallagher played in central midfield alongside Lewis Ferguson.
Both players turned in promising debuts they can be very proud of.
Hedges and Gallagher can be big players for Aberdeen this season
We’ll start with Hedges. He started out on the left against RoPS and was a constant threat to their defence.
The Welshman was constantly running at his opposite number Juho Hyvarinen. Hedges was getting balls into the box at every opportunity with precision. He was eventually going to swing in that killer ball and sure enough he did.
Niall McGinn got on the end of one of Hedges many deliveries, rounded defender Kalle Katz, before dinking the ball over Antonio Reguero in the RoPS goal.
Gallagher was just as impressive. The versatile Irishman covered every blade of grass, which in hindsight, wasn’t that hard given how fast he is. The amount of times he won the ball in the middle was ridiculous.
McInnes’ side benefitted massively from his constant hassling of the RoPS midfield and backline. He looked tidy with the ball too, making a number of key passes, one of which lead to the second Dons goal.
These two provided very promising signs from Aberdeen’s first competitive match. Red Army supporters will be hoping they carry this form into the second leg in Finland next week and beyond.
