Derby County midfielder Kyle McAllister is set for a St Mirren homecoming according to the Daily Record.

The Buddies academy graduate is close to sealing a permanent switch back to Paisley the report claims.

He had a successful loan spell at the club last term, which helped them secure top flight safety.

This is a sensible move for the 20-year-old.

St Mirren academy graduate McAllister was never getting a look in at Derby

McAllister’s in the final year of his Rams deal. Even with a permanent deal though, the Buddies won’t have to worry about finances according to the report.

Derby have deemed him surplus to requirements. They are said to be willing to let him go for nothing now, so that they can insert a sell-on clause in his Buddies deal.

This is a sensible move for McAllister. With the likes of Tom Huddlestone, George Evans, Kieran Dowell, Graeme Shinnie and Krystian Bielik all ahead of him this season, he was never going to get the chance to prove himself.

Perhaps he jumped at the offer to move down south too soon. He’s still only 20-years-old, but his potential is there for all to see. Maybe in a few years he’ll be ready for Championship football down south.

McAllister is more than good enough for Jim Goodwin’s side just now though. The Rams youngster can play in many positions. Last term, according to Transfermarkt, he played on both flanks, in central midfield, centre forward and as a number 10.

McAllister adds pace which Goodwin doesn’t have going forward just now. His versatility will likely be something the Buddies boss will want to utilise.

At 20-years-old too he represents fantastic potential. In today’s market, if McAllister plays well for a couple of seasons, St Mirren will be able to sell him for a seven figure fee.

This deal makes perfect sense. All parties will be hoping to get it over the line quickly.
