Dundee United boss rues ‘uncharacteristic’ performance as Terrors struggle

Dundee United manager Thomas Courts admits his side’s performance in last night’s 1-0 defeat by Motherwell was “very disappointing” as he admitted the Steelmen deserved to take the three points amid a deluge in Lanarkshire.

Tony Watt scored the only goal of the game eleven minutes in when he curled home a fantastic finish from the edge of the box, moving Motherwell to within a point of the Arabs in fourth place in the league.

Courts confessed his side’s performance was “uncharacteristic” as he praised Motherwell for dominating the game physically and denying Dundee United thr chance to play the way they like.

“It was very disappointing,” Courts said. “We were almost split into two parts – pre-deluge we started on the back foot, we were tentative and it was almost like we were waiting on Motherwell capitalising.

“Then the second half it became a lottery with the conditions.

“It was uncharacteristic of us to play like we did. We never got the chance to play the type of football we are accustomed to so couldn’t create the chances we expected.

“But credit to Motherwell because they were excellent and physically dominated situations.”

United have now won only one of their last six games but still hold on to fourth in the Premiership going into the hectic Christmas schedule.

With clashes against both sides of the Old Firm to come over the next few weeks, Dundee United need to perform far better than they did last night if they are to have any chance of taking something against the Glasgow sides.

Motherwell and Hibs both sit poised to take advantage of any further slips from Courts’ side – and this weekend’s clash with Celtic at Tannadice will be a huge test for Courts’ players.
