Dundee United sporting director Tony Asghar has confirmed that the Tangerines have offered Sunderland target Lawrence Shankland a deal at Tannadice. To say it’s a bit over ambitious would be an understatement.
Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Asghar said: “We are in talks with Shankland’s representatives and we have made an offer to come to Dundee United.

“We see Lawrence as a top player and we want him to be part of our Championship challenge and beyond. We know Lawrence is very much a player in demand and has a lot of offers elsewhere and we are hopeful things will come to a conclusion, either way, very quickly.”
Shankland deal is unrealistic, Dundee United should focus on others
You can’t fault the effort, but this seems like a waste of energy for United. Surely they know they’ll pretty far back behind in the race to sign the prolific hitman?

Sunderland , according to the Scottish Sun, have reportedly tabled an offer for him. If that’s true, they’ll trump anything Asghar and United have got to offer. Even Hearts, who have reported interest according to the same report, could do a better deal.
Even the striker’s former boss Ian McCall throws this into doubt. He recently told the BBC that Shankland will go to a ‘sleeping giant type club’. Dundee United are not a massive club in the grand scheme of things, so this rules them out.
Say the Arabs won the race, why would Shankland even want to go here? With offers like Sunderland reportedly on his doorstep, a move to Tannadice would be a major sideways step. Staying at Ayr would perhaps be a better option than United.

United are trying to make a marquee signing and fair play to them. However, if reports are to be believed, they’re unlikely to get him with the likes of Sunderland rumored to be sniffing about.
