According to the Scottish Sun, Kilmarnock are after Bolton defender David Wheater.

After eight and a half years with the Trotters, Wheater is on the lookout for his next club. Bolton have fell on hard times financially and now Wheater is a free agent after leaving them.

Killie are the team reportedly after him. The Scottish Sun claims he is discussing a move with the Rugby Park club.

Wheater will expect to play, can Kilmarnock give him assurances?

Wheater made himself a fans’ favourite at the Macron Stadium, following his £2.3million move from fellow EFL side Middlesbrough in 2011.

He’s spent his full professional career south of the border, so now into his 30s, he may be tempted to try his hand north of it.

Can Kilmarnock give him assurances over game time though? Wheater has been an ever-present for Bolton over the past eight and a half years. He’s not coming to Rugby Park to sit on the bench.

After the season they’ve just had, the pairing of Stuart Findlay and Kirk Broadfoot should not be split up. Wheater would have to earn his place and who knows whether he’d be up for that. The centre-back will most likely have offers to stay in England and play every week.

The recently departed Bolton defender would add experience to the defensive ranks. He’s not the quickest, however, he makes up for that with football knowledge, defensive shrewdness and leadership.

Wheater would be a good addition, if he’s willing to prove he deserves to start at Rugby Park. He’d provide solid competition with a good pedigree at a high level. Who knows, maybe he could work his way into the starting XI.
