Dundee United have confirmed the signing of in-demand striker Lawrence Shankland. The ex-Ayr hitman was a target for many, with the Scottish Sun claiming Sunderland had went as far as offering him a contract.
He’ll back in the Scottish Championship though and you have to wonder why that is. He no doubt had offers from all over the place, why has he picked a relatively sideways step for his next career move?

Regardless, this is signing of the summer stuff from the striker’s new club United.
No wonder some Dundee United fans are buzzing with this news.

Shankland choosing Dundee United throws up more questions
There will be a million and one things fans want to know about this deal. Sunderland fans, if the reported contract offer was true, will probably wonder why he hasn’t opted for them.

In terms of career ambitions, a move to say Sunderland makes more sense. He’d be playing for a big club in the Black Cats and if he helped fire them back to the Championship, he’d be on an even bigger platform for big moves elsewhere.
Even Hearts would have been a better option career wise. At this stage Shankland has to test himself, but instead, he’s opted for home comforts.

United won’t be caring one bit. They’ve got one of the most in-demand talent this summer for nothing. They’ll even be wondering how they’ve managed to persuade him to join them.
Hopefully this doesn’t blow up in Shankland’s face. If he flops in Tangerine, he’ll likely look back on this move with a lot of regret.
