St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has warned his players that they can’t “swell” on making it into the top six after last night’s win over St Johnstone – reminding them there’s a “hell of a lot of football” to come between now and the end of the season.
The Buddies came back from a goal down to beat St Johnstone 2-1 as goals from Conor Ronan and Alex Greive sent St Mirren one point clear of Hibs in sixth place with a game in hand over the Easter Road side.
Goodwin has never shied away from his desire to make St Mirren a top-six side but knows it could quickly change with only six points separating fourth and tenth in the league.
“We’re where we want to be. We’ve spoken about it over past seasons about putting us in the mix for the top half,” Goodwin said.
“But it’s not job done yet. There’s a hell of a lot of football to be played.
“We’ve got a game in hand and if we win that it’ll put us into the scary position of fourth, which would be incredible at this stage of the season.
“We can’t dwell on the win though. As it’s so tight and congested we can’t get carried away as you could quickly go back to ninth or tenth.
“We need to remember why we are on the good run and it’s down to hard work.
“Since I’ve been in the door we’ve come from behind numerous times. We very rarely go behind and don’t come back into the game.
“It shows there’s a lot of character not to give in. We had a sticky spell in the middle of the first half but we deservedly got the win.”
