It was a day of contrasts for Partick Thistle fans.
The Jags reached the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win over East Fife. At the same time though, Falkirk defeated Alloa 2-1 to send Thistle bottom of the Championship table.
Gary Caldwell’s side are a point behind Alloa, and two behind Falkirk after the Bairns’ victory.
Whilst Thistle fans are no doubt delighted to reach the last eight of the cup, there has to be concerns about a second consecutive relegation.
Their next fixture is massive in their battle to stay in the Championship, as they travel to Recreation Park to take on Alloa in a real six pointer.
Thistle’s fans will be more confident of getting a good result though than they had been in previous weeks. The win over Alloa is their fourth in a row in all completions, following victories over Stranraer, Queen of the South and Inverness.
Gary Caldwell struggled at first at Partick but in recent weeks he has shown signs that he is growing into the job.
The next step in that process is making sure Thistle stay in the Championship, and build on that next season.
The Scottish Cup run is a nice distraction but no doubt avoiding relegation is far more important.
