Scotland star Scott McTominay has been touted as the next captain of Manchester United by fans of the English giants as they responded to a club tweet praising the Red Devils’ “midfield engine.”
The Scotland midfielder has come in for criticism from some for his performances for United but, after naming him in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, he was backed by Steve Clarke who insisted he has performed well for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side so far this season, saying: “I’ll probably just show him a rerun of the Man United-Tottenham game when he was the best player on the pitch and say ‘There you go.’ That’s all he needs to worry about, his performances on the pitch. And his performances have been good.
“When your club is struggling, especially a club the size of Man United, everybody is going to get it – from the manager all the way down.
“Scott’s big enough to be able to handle it himself.”
After he was hailed by United’s official Twitter account, there were plenty of critics of the 24-year-old but there were some fans who think he should replace England star Harry Maguire as their captain.
The 28-times capped McTominay has become a key player for both club and country while being much-maligned by sections of both fanbases but the Lancaster-born star consistently carries himself well.
Whether he’ll one day get handed the armband at Old Trafford – or for Scotland – remains to be seen but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him eventually be handed the captaincy for club or country.
For some, that should happen at Manchester United sooner or later, although they seem to be in the minority for now.
