Jake Carroll had a yellow card turned into a red for a challenge he made on his Motherwell debut against Livingston- and the left-back knows he got away with one on the day.

Stephen Robinson’s side will travel to West Lothian today for what should be a good clash. Both sides are enjoying great seasons, with Livi punching above their weight in fifth with Motherwell flying in third.

Carroll will visit the Tony Macaroni Arena for the second time this season. His first visit came on his Well debut and he got away with a booking during it. His late lunge on Nicky Devlin was escalated from a booking to a two-game ban following the match.

The full-back knows it was slightly naughty but he says he’s now glad to be playing regularly: “We’ve started the year well. The boys are a settled team and we look strong.

“There’s still a long way to go but we’re happy with how it’s been going so far. The backline has been brilliant to play in, Peter Hartley has been brilliant for me. Declan Gallagher has obviously been flying and got a well-deserved Scotland cap.

“At right-back you’ve got Richard Tait and Liam Grimshaw who are both excellent. Even the goalkeepers, they are the best two I’ve seen in terms of a number one and two. You couldn’t split them, it’s really good.

“One of our toughest games of the season was away to Livingston. They’re not just physical, they can play as well. It’s tough a place to go with the astro and all that comes with it, but we’ll do our best.

“It was a bit of what I expected. I’d expected that you would get away with a bit more in terms of tackles and I found out quickly that isn’t the case! So I had to change my game a bit.

“I knew it was a risky one, so I did a couple of rolls. But I got up and it was only a yellow, so I thought I’d got away with it. I had to go for it though, so it was just one of those things I had to go for.

“It was difficult to get back in. I know there’s a lot of competition and I went through a sticky patch at the start of the season. That wasn’t my only suspension, I had illness, injuries, everything was hitting at the same time. It’s nice to get a run of games at the moment.”
