Collin Quaner has been given the backing of Jim Goodwin – but the St Mirren boss has warned the book will be thrown at his former Huddersfield Town striker if he’s proven wrong.
The Saints won 1-0 against Ross County on Saturday thanks to a Jamie McGrath penalty late in the second half after Quaner tumbled in the box. There was minimal contact on the former Huddersfield Town man and it left Staggies boss John Hughes annoyed.
He said: “To lose the game the way we did? Referees have a tough job and they make a decision instantly. I can see it after the game. But when it happened our video guy said it was never a penalty – so he’s been conned. He will realise he’s made the wrong decision.
“The striker flung his leg out there and it wouldn’t be a free-kick in the middle of pitch. We’re bitterly disappointed. With what’s at stake, boys playing for livelihoods, you’re wanting these decisions to be correct.
“But who would be a ref? He gets paid though and he needs to make these decisions spot on. I wish it was my team. If that’s where the game has gone maybe we’re too honest. I’m not going to point the finger at the ref. He made an honest decision but once he sees it he’ll know he’s been conned.”
While Goodwin knows it was a soft penalty, he doesn’t think Quaner dived for it: “If it’s proved he’s dived I’ll be the first to speak to him. There have been a lot of soft penalties awarded recently but if my player deserved the book thrown at him then so be it.
“I don’t think it was simulation or a dive but it was soft. Collin got the wrong side of the defender. I’ve made my opinions clear on penalties given against us. I’m not going to try to pull the wool over people’s eyes and say it was a stonewaller.
“But that’s the way the game has gone and if we don’t do something about it that’s what happens. There was slight contact. Was there enough to make the big man go over? I’ll have to have a look.”
