Dundee manager James McPake has opened up on the bonus row between the Dens Park players and the club – but insists it hasn’t affected his players’ performances this season with the Dark Blues rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.
Talks over a win bonus for league and cup competitions have ground to a halt earlier this month, sparking fears it could distract the Dundee players as they seek their first league win of the campaign but McPake insists their focus is on getting results on the pitch.
McPake has been through similar situations as a player during his own career as he claimed the bonuses were at the foot of the list of priorities for his players as they prepare to face Aberdeen this weekend.
“I don’t know if it’s been resolved, but I’ve been involved in these before as captain of clubs,” McPake said
“It’s happened at every single club I’ve been at and it will continue to happen. It’s a negotiation thing and that’s where your senior players come to the fore.
“The club have always been fair here and it will get sorted. They will know roughly what they will get. There are ballpark figures at every club.
“It’s dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. It’s at that stage. So it’s not an unwanted or unwelcome distraction.
The players just want to win football games. Everybody has different motivations, but I would put the bonus at the bottom of those.
“I don’t think they knew what the bonus was going into the play-offs and it didn’t hamper us then.
“I haven’t seen any poor reactions or bad feeling about the place.
“The bonus has not affected any game this season and it won’t affect the way the lads approach Saturday’s game.”
