Dundee United boss hails teen sensation after impressing against Celtic

Dundee United manager Thomas Courts has hailed teen sensation Kerr Smith after a fantastic performance in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Celtic Park after replacing veteran Charlie Mulgrew at the heart of the Terrors’ defence.

Smith, who doesn’t turn 17 until December, was fantastic alongside Ryan Edwards in defence, as Ian Harkes’ header sealed a share of the points and extended Courts’ unbeaten run against the Old Firm this season.

Courts had praise for several of his players after the draw with Ange Postecoglou’s side but singled out Smith, admitting he tool a “lot of pride” from seeing him excel against the Hoops.

“I’ve said before that I’m really proud of Kerr,” said Courts. “I take a lot of pride in his performance.

“But I take just as much delight in seeing Ian Harkes score in consecutive weeks or Peter Pawlett in the form of his life.

“I delight in the workrate that Jeando Fuchs puts in. I could go on and on and on with the players.

“Kerr is a Dundee United player. He’s 16 and because he is young he is going to make mistakes. He’s going to have poor games.

“But he also needs to feel like he has the trust of his manager to pitch him into big occasions.

“The team need to absorb that and work with that. I thought they did that perfectly well against Celtic.”

Massive point for Dundee United after a rollercoaster week

Coming away from Celtic Park with a point is a huge result for the Tannadice side after losing to Hibs in the quarter-finals of the League Cup in midweek.

A rollercoaster week that saw them start it by beating local rivals Dundee has been a big test of Courts and his players and it wouldn’t be unfair to say there have been huge improvements from last season.

Performing consistently now is the biggest challenge for the Dundee United players if the want to challenge for European places this season.
