St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin says vaccine passports aren’t ‘very democratic’ as he hopes Scottish football takes a stand against their introduction.

The Scottish government will vote on the proposal that would come into effect from the start of October. It would mean that people wanting to attend football matches with over 10,000 people must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. St Mirren host Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership this weekend.

Goodwin said: “Personally I’m against it. I don’t believe it’s very democratic and it’s not something I would be urging the government to do. People should have a decision and a right to a choice whether they get vaccinated or not.

“Having to show vaccine passports when you’re wanting to go to concerts and games of football is not something I would encourage. That’s just my opinion on it. I know people out there will jump all over it and ask what education I have on politics. I’ve got none – but I’ve got an opinion on things and I believe people have got the right to a choice.

“I don’t think this is something we should be forced into. I hope the SFA and the governing bodies and all of the football clubs stand up to it and don’t agree to this kind of thing happening.”

Meanwhile, Goodwin has confirmed new signing Matt Millar will play as a right-wing-back. The Saints boss has played three at the back so far this season and has moved to bring in the Australian full-back, despite Richard Tait, Marcus Fraser and Jay Henderson being capable of featuring in the role. But Millar will play his natural position.

Goodwin explained: “I have brought him in as a right-wing-back as we are playing three at the back. It served us well in the second half of last season and we have new players still trying to adapt to what we want to do. Chelsea are a good example of a team playing three at the back very well, so for now, we’re sticking with it.”
