Hibs have been solid at the back this season – and new signing Alex Gogic has been a very big part of that according to Joe Newell.

The Hibees won their fifth game from seven at the weekend with a fine 3-0 away win to St Mirren. Newell got on the scoresheet, a lovely first time finish from the edge of the box to beat Zdenek Zlamal.

Again Jack Ross’ side kept a clean sheet, yet to concede from open play seven games into the season. It’s a tough test for them next, facing a Rangers side who have yet to concede a goal this term.

Newell has been placed in the centre of midfield this season and it’s something he’s really enjoying. The weekend goalscorer has spoken of his central role and how key contributions from the likes of Gogic are to the Hibees.

“It was a good performance, I think it was important to bounce back after Aberdeen,” said Newell. “We’d obviously had a great start to the season so the Aberdeen loss still hurts a little bit. It was important to show a reaction.

“It feels like there’s a good balance to the team. You can see that with the defensive record we’ve started the season with. Alex Gogic coming in has improved us in that respect.
“As a collective, the defence including Gogic have done really well. I’m playing more central now which I prefer. That’s definitely more my natural position.
“I think that’s why the gaffer is now getting the best out of me. The gaffer and the coaches have been on at me to try and improve. They’ve given me lots of little tips.
“It’s all about me getting further forward and trying to get into the box more. I think that was the first time I’d thought about it and got in there and managed to tuck one away.”
