Stephen Kelly says that Rangers are pleased with his Championship progress- and he’s delighted to be focusing on all things Ayr United for now.

The young midfielder is enjoying a good season on loan at the Honest Men from Rangers. He’s played 21 Championship games, scoring five and assisting on three occasions.

His latest effort in front of goal was a winner against Inverness. His goal sealed a 1-0 win, putting Ayr just a point behind Caley Thistle, who are second in the Championship.

Kelly is enjoying his time at Somerset Park, with an Ibrox return this month never on the cards.

“It’s been a while since I’ve scored so it was good to get back on the scoresheet,” said Kelly. “I quite like the free role going forward. I’ve always liked getting on the end of things as a midfielder.

“It was always the view to get a full season of playing real football. I’m really happy to continue playing here, it’s been great for me. I’m delighted to stay.

“There wasn’t much talk about going back to Rangers. If anything else came up they’d have looked at it but it was always a view to staying here. I was more than happy to stay.

“We’re going week to week, just taking each game as it comes. Rangers have been delighted. Out of the loan ones, I’ve probably played the most. So they are happy with my progress.”
