Hamilton left-back Kieran MacDonald has been pleased with Hearts loanee Mihai Popescu and Wolves talent Luke Matheson since their Scottish Championship arrivals.

A centre-back and right-back respectively, the pair have joined from Hearts and Wolves on season-long loans to bolster head coach Stuart Taylor’s backline. Accies have won one of their opening five league matches this season and defender MacDonald believes the new additions can help shoot Hamilton up the table.

He said: “We have signed Mihai, who’s a big boy from Hearts. He’s experienced and he knows what he wants to do. Hopefully he can help us out. Luke is decent, he’s only 18. I’ve only seen him a couple of times but he’s very good for his age. He just needs more confidence. It’s a big difference coming from U23s football to Scottish football.”

Meanwhile, Taylor is urging his players to learn from their most recent outing against Ayr United this weekend, a 4-0 defeat to Arbroath: “The lads are bursting for a game to get it out of their system. Speaking to a couple of them, there was a huge frustration about how the game went.

“They felt that there wasn’t much in the game, we hit the crossbar and then immediately we go and lose the goal. It’s my job to pick them up again and make sure we learn from it.”
