Curtis Main shone when given his Aberdeen chance in Lanarkshire- and now he expects to start against champions Celtic at Pittodrie.

The striker replaced 21-goal Sam Cosgrove during the Dons’ 3-1 win over Accies. He notched the first goal, a strike which was Aberdeen’s first in the league during 2020. Main’s overall performance has also earned plaudits after an energetic display.

It’s put him right in the mix for a starting berth against Celtic. The Dons will look to improve upon their last Pittodrie showing against the champions, where they lost 4-0.

After a great effort and goal against Accies, Main insists there’s no way in his mind that a return to the bench is happening: “I came in the summer hoping to go straight into the team and show the Aberdeen fans why I signed.

“Unfortunately I’ve not been able to get in the team as frequently as I’d like for various reasons. I’ve had to be patient and knuckle down behind the scenes, stuff that maybe goes unnoticed. Let’s just say I know where the manager’s office is!

“But he knows that from my point of view, I’m here to play and do well for the club. I’m always banging on the door asking for opportunities when I’m not getting them. I can play in a one, two or a three. It doesn’t really matter to me, as long as I’m on the pitch I’m going to contribute.

“I fully expect to retain my place for Sunday. I don’t see myself as coming in and putting in a performance and expecting to come out the side. That’s not my personality or something I would ever accept from myself.

“My thought is that I’m looking forward to the next game.”
