Ray McKinnon insists that despite finding themselves in League One, Falkirk really ‘should be’ in the Premiership.
The Bairns were relegated to the third tier last year and are now fighting for a quick return to the Championship this season. They currently sit top of the League One table.
McKinnon is happy that the board are continuing to back him, as it’ll help him get the club to where they should be.
He said: “I think the board understand that it’s impossible to build teams in six weeks that are going to win you two divisions. It takes time, players come available at different times.
“You probably see that the teams that are most successful have a backbone of a team that have been there for a few years, the likes of Aberdeen and Celtic, who have players who’ve been there for years.
“We need to get to that stage. I think Falkirk with the fanbase, stadium and everything else, we should be Premiership. You need to get there, you need to put the building blocks to get there.
“You can’t just go to the Premiership and buy 20 players, it wouldn’t work. You’ve got to go into that league with a good nucleus of players you know you can trust and it’s the same with moving up divisions, you’ve got to do it in building stages.
“Falkirk are a Premiership club like St Johnstone, who have now established themselves there. It takes time and it takes planning, and if the board are willing to back me, that’s a good sign as it shows they want the same thing as me.”
