Anton McElhone says Morton must improve after their winless run in 2021 continued against Raith Rovers, rating Kazaiah Sterling’s debut after joining from Tottenham Hotspur on Deadline Day.
The striker has signed a six-month loan deal in order to help inject some goal threat into the Ton team but the Tottenham Hotspur talent’s debut from the bench didn’t go to plan as Morton lost 1-0 to Raith Rovers.
Boss McElhone expects more from him: “I think it was a quiet debut. I am not going to talk fluff and say he set the world alight. But he has travelled up having not played in Scotland before.
“We expect more from him and every player as when he comes on when we are 1-0 down. We can’t lay blame on him. We make subs and you have to make an impact, we have got to do better as a team, it’s a team game.”
Iain Davidson’s 12th minute header leaves Morton three points above the relegation play-off spot and sixth in the Championship, McElhone well aware things must improve: “It’s been frustrating since the turn of the year. If you are in a game at 0-0, you always have a chance.
“But to then go down to a set-piece again, that’s an achilles heel for us, and we are doing all we can to remedy that. We have got to do better. We have to defend better, we have to not give the free kick away, you have to defend it, no excuses.
“Going forward we haven’t laid a glove on the goalkeeper. Was it acceptable? Not good enough. We’ve not won in seven or eight games and that’s not acceptable. We have quality but we have to do more as a group.”
