Raith Rovers manager John McGlynn was ‘delighted’ to see supporters at Stark’s Park after goals from Stoke City loanee Ethan Varian and Dario Zanatta sealed a 2-1 win over Aberdeen.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas put the Scottish Premiership side ahead in the Premier Sports Cup round of 16 match. But Varian scored on his first start since arriving from Stoke City to level the tie before Zanatta netted a memorable winner for the Championship team. McGlynn’s men have a glamour tie against Celtic in the quarter-finals.
Fans were not present in Kirkcaldy last season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Rovers manager said: “I am delighted for young Ethan Varian. He’s come up on loan from Stoke City and gets the goal. Dario Zanatta caused them all sorts of problems and then got his goal.
“We’re in the quarterfinals and I’ve been told it’s for the first time since 1994 – so I’m delighted about that. The only unfortunate thing is, that is when Raith Rovers won it. To try to equal that puts enormous pressure on us – but I’ll take it.
“It was great for the players, and the fans, because we put in a number of great performances here last season – had a number of great results – and there was no-one here to see it. On Sunday, we got another one of those performances and results. I’m so delighted that our fans were here to witness it.”
