Stephen Robinson says Motherwell may finally be able to see the real version of Rangers loanee Jake Hastie after a bright weekend cameo.
The Rangers talent gave the Steelmen a spark from the bench but it wasn’t enough as they suffered another defeat, losing 1-0 to St Mirren at Fir Park.
Hastie left Lanarkshire for Rangers in 2019 but has been unable to break into the Gers first-team, leaving on loan for Rotherham United last season.
He returned to Fir Park in the summer as he aimed to rekindle the form that won him his Rangers move. But he hasn’t made an impact, playing just 181 minutes of Premiership football this season.
Robinson isn’t able to hide from the fact that his summer recruit hasn’t hit standard – but he hopes that the weekend display can be a turning point, although he is unavailable for the game against parent club Rangers next Saturday.
“Jak hasn’t done enough, there’s no disguising that,” said Robinson. “It’s taken us a long long time to get him to where we thought we could, through lack of confidence, lack of fitness.
“He’s been pushing himself over the last two or three months, he didn’t come to us in good condition and he knows that himself, that’s not saying it was anything to do with Rangers, he left them in good condition but he didn’t push himself and he has now.
”He deserves credit as he gave us the width we haven’t had. The other wide players we brought on haven’t done it.
“He gave us a little hope. We haven’t had a lot of options because of the form of certain players but hopefully this can spark Jake into this season.”
