Reading loanee Luke Southwood says he and his Hamilton teammates will do all they can to ensure Accies don’t face the drop this season.

They face a huge match with Hearts at Tynecastle this afternoon. A defeat for Brian Rice’s side could send them bottom and it’s a situation Southwood will want to avoid.

The England youth international has made himself Accies’ number one since arriving on loan from Reading. He says that he’s eager to take on more responsibility at the back after numerous injuries to experienced pros like Brian Easton.

“I think we just need to concentrate on our results and what we’re doing,” said Southwood. “We’ve been on a tough run but we knew it was coming. It’s good to play in the big games but sometimes it can get you into a mentality where it feels like you’re losing all the time.

“It would be good to play some games where we feel we have a right good chance in. It’s hard, the team is chopping and changing through injuries at the minute. We need players to build partnerships with each other but we’ve got a good squad.

“As the goalkeeper, it’s your job to take charge of the back four and the defensive line. It’s something that I need to challenge myself to do in the coming games as there are going to be new players coming in. I think it’s important to keep everything organised.”
