Murray Davidson says clubs with interest in St Johnstone teammate Ali McCann will be ‘impressed’ by the midfielder’s performance in Europe, amid scouting missions from Celtic.
The Parkhead club have scouted McCann twice as his stock increases in the Scottish Premiership club while EFL teams are also keen. McCann helped St Johnstone dethrone Celtic in both the League Cup and Scottish Cup last season while he was arguably Man of the Match in an outstanding 1-1 draw for Saints away to Galatasaray.
The return leg of Saints’ Europa League third round qualifier is tonight, with a win at McDiarmid Park enough to guarantee group stage football until Christmas for St Johnstone. Davidson says it’s not hard to see why clubs like Celtic and those down south have an interest in his midfield partner.
He said of McCann: “I said to Ali after the game that I thought he was outstanding. It didn’t surprise me, I see it each day in training. The biggest compliment I can pay Ali is that he is so level-headed. He doesn’t get carried away. No matter if it’s a training session or Galatasaray away, he’s got the same approach.
“He’s got a quiet confidence about himself. You can see he is confident in himself and assured. His performance last week was brilliant. His pressing, his composure on the ball, I don’t think he could have done anything more.
“He took himself to another level last week and if there are teams looking at him you have got to be impressed. I was 10 yards away from him and I thought he was outstanding.”
