St Johnstone’s Callum Hendry has disclosed what manager Callum Davidson told his players in the aftermath of the Perth side’s 2-1 Betfred Cup win over Motherwell at Fir Park.

Hendry scored St Johnstone’s equaliser in the game, which the Saints went on to win and reach the last eight of the tournament, where they will face a trip to current Championship leaders Dunfermline.

Not reached a cup final since 2014

St Johnstone have not reached a cup final since the 2014 Scottish Cup win over Dundee United. Hendry has revealed that Davidson wants that to end, to bring some cheer to the fans in what has been a very difficult year.

“Cup runs are massive. Especially for a club like ours. We are delighted to get through especially after going 1-0 down.“Anything can happen in a cup. I think we deserve a run in one of them” Hendry said.

“We want to win”

“The gaffer said after the game that he wants us in a final. It’s just as important as the league games. So it’s massive for us. We want to win some silverware for the fans again” he concluded.

The player also praised Davidson for giving him encouragement during a spell where he found scoring goals hard to come by.

“It’s been about getting my head down and working hard. The gaffer and all the boys told me it would come and to be patient. These things happen. It’s football. The gaffer has pulled me aside a lot and filled me with confidence. He’s told me just to keep my head down and keep going.”
