Marcus Fraser says he is ‘buzzing’ with his new deal at St Mirren as he extends his stay in Paisley until the summer of 2023.

The defender signed a one-year deal last summer following over five years at Ross County, where he became captain and won the League Cup. Now he has his eyes fixed on more silverware, taking to Scottish Cup semi-final action with St Mirren against St Johnstone this afternoon.

He’s signed a new deal beforehand and Fraser didn’t take much notice of interest elsewhere in doing so: “It is brilliant for me moving forward. I know where I will be the next two years. I have thoroughly enjoyed this season. I have played a lot of games, the team has done well and I have fitted into that so I am looking forward to the next two years.

“There were a couple of other things throughout the season. Even with my contract situation here, I was just enjoying my football and I felt I was playing decent. I didn’t take my eye off that and a couple of months ago we had a ridiculous amount of games so I had to focus on that.

“Once the contract situation came, we agreed everything and I am buzzing about that. I was in talks with the club and we thought it was a good fit for me and the club. There were one or two other things for me but it wasn’t concrete. I am just happy to be signed here.”

This is St Mirren’s second semi-final of the season after reaching the League Cup semi-final in January, Hibs awaiting today’s winner in the final. Fraser knows this is ‘massive’: “We have got to two semi-finals and obviously we have a big game to look forward to on Sunday.

“To win a trophy at any part of your career is massive. If you ask all footballers, it is massive for them. But just one step at a time, Sunday is the next big one and we will take it from there. If we do the business we will have a big day to look forward to but first and foremost we have a big task on our hands, but we look forward to it.”
