Stephen Robinson has some concern ahead of Motherwell’s Europa League qualifier – but he isn’t ‘going to hide’ from their poor start to the season.
The Well went down 1-0 to Hamilton at Fir Park in a bitterly disappointing Lanarkshire derby defeat. It was a familiar story as they dominated possession but couldn’t convert their chances.
A late Hakeem Odoffin header secured the points for Accies as Motherwell look for a morale-boosting victory in their Europa League first round qualifier with Glentoran on Thursday night.
Having scored two goals in five Premiership games, all of which came in the same match, Robinson is well aware some of his players aren’t quite at it. But he knows it’s not time for panic, despite having some worries.
“It was frustrating the whole game,” said Robinson. “We must have had 70 percent possession – that’s Rangers and Celtic material – and I don’t know how many times David Turnbull has to put balls across the six-yard box.
“All the stats in the world don’t mean anything when you don’t get the result. The difference between the teams was the desire to go and score a goal. We didn’t show enough desire to finish the game off or defend in our own box.
“We can’t keep saying it’s bad luck, you make your own luck by being brave and we were not brave enough to finish the game off. It looks like confidence. On paper we look like a real threat up front but paper doesn’t win you football matches.
“We don’t have a magic wand – or a magic cheque book to change the personnel. We have a decent squad but people are under-performing. You are not going to win football matches if your strikers are not in form, whether you are Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen or Motherwell.
“This was a game we completely dominated yet they had a side who were willing to put bodies on the line. When it came for us to do the same, we didn’t do it. I won’t criticise individuals, it’s collective responsibility, ultimately I take the blame.
“Is it a concern for Thursday? That’s stating the obvious. We’ve not been ruthless enough in the six-yard box. We’ve not been brave enough to take a hit in there. The results have not been good enough and I’m not going to hide from that.”
