Hearts collapse again as Ross County earn point with two stoppage time strikes – 3 things we learned

Hearts found more ways to upset their fans as they threw away a comfortable lead at Ross County by conceding two stoppage time goals.

A James Wilson double had the Jambos coasting but they shot themselves in the foot by conceding to Josh Nisbet and Jordan White in the 97th and 99th minutes.

The 17-year-old found the net inside two minutes and repeated the trick right at the start of the second half too as the Jambos looked comfortable and thought they were about to leapfrog their opponents.

Liam Boyce was restored to the line-up in the absence of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland and was the provider for the opener, threading a perfect through ball for his strike partner who did the rest.

They soaked up some pressure and then Wilson showed his instincts again on around 48 minutes. James Penrice bombed to the byline and his cross was nodded home by the striker.

Boyce thought he had made it three when knocking in the rebound from Blair Spittal’s free-kick but was ruled out for offisde.

His side still would have thought they were heading for a massive three points but stoppage time drama put paid to that.

After a ball was fired into the box and a bit of pinball, Joshua Nisbet fired home.

Hearts then failed to properly defend another ball into the box and a Craig Gordon howler allowed Jordan White to tap in an equaliser.

A brilliant comeback for the hosts but a total disaster for their visitors.

Hearts find new ways to shoot themselves in the foot

The Jambos appeared to be on the way to a valuable victory that would at least slightly lift the mood.

Surely even though couldn’t throw it away from that position?

Think again.

They imploded and showed the defensive vulnerabilities that they have been all season by allowing the Staggies to fire in two goals right at the death and steal an unlikely point.

The Jambos should have been looking ahead to how they could build on a good away win but instead crisis mode continues.

Wonder boy Wilson

17-year-old Wilson should have won this game for Hearts with a brilliant double and is now their joint top scorer.

Today’s pair of finishes brought him level with Blair Spittal on five goals in all competitions and that’s despite Wilson only starting five games this season.

The Jambos shouldn’t be so heavily reliant on a teen but that is where they are currently and he has stepped up to the plate.

He has been a predatory striker who plays on the shoulder and sniffs out chances and he is proving he can do it in the first-team.

They will add to their attacking ranks in January but Wilson won’t be giving up his place in the team easily if he carries on this form.

VAR confusion

Hearts were initially awarded a penalty for Michee Efete’s foul on James Penrice but after a VAR check, referee Ross Hardie changed it to a free-kick.

Contact between the pair started outside the box but continued into the area and that’s when Penrice hit the deck.

After all the uproar with Rangers’ Vaclav Cerny in the Premier Sports Cup final, it was expected to still be given but wasn’t in the end. It was not a tug as the Cerny one, so perhaps that’s why?

Moments later there was a check for a County penalty.

Nobody seemed to know what the check was actually for but it seemed as if it was about to be given, until there was then a check for an offside in the build-up.
