St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson has admitted that the Perth side were preparing to travel to Ibrox for tonight’s Premiership clash with Rangers in a convoy of 40 cars before the Scottish FA and SPFL’s Joint Resource Group admitted they had got the rules over Covid badly wrong.
After new restrictions were announced, the JRG told clubs that a single positive test on a team bus would lead to every passenger having to isolate for ten days before quickly doing a 180.
That saw Davidson and his players ready to drive themselves to Govan for tonight’s games as the St Johnstone boss admitted the original rules from the JRG left him worried.
“The plan was to take 40 cars to Ibrox if the rules hadn’t changed. It’s all about keeping people safe and available for games,” Davidson confessed.
“We need to make sure there are no hidden rules that end up meaning we lose four or five players. It did worry me a little bit.
“A good thing for us is we’re quite central in Perth and a lot of guys live in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
“We don’t have Ross County or Aberdeen away between now and January so we’re quite fortunate in that respect. We always had red zones at McDiarmid anyway. We kept our two metre distances around the place – gym and dining areas. That never changed.
“Buses and travel is something we need to make sure we’re really strict on over this period so we don’t lose any players to Covid.”
Ahead of the vital run of games over the festive period, Davidson is hopeful that football can continue entertaining fans despite fears over the Omicron variant.
“Hopefully we can get the festive period out of the way and if anything does happen it won’t be until January. Then we can see where we are with this new variant.
“Obviously the most important thing is people’s health and stopping folk from getting hospitalised.
“Hopefully we can keep entertaining people during this time and get people through the door.”
