Curtis Main was handed a first Aberdeen start during the Dons’ match with St Mirren. He’ll be disappointed he didn’t make more of his big opportunity.

The Dons slipped to a 1-0 defeat in Paisley, a disappointing result. Derek McInnes made four changes to freshen up his squad, but it didn’t work in his favour.

Main also didn’t do much to impress on his first Aberdeen start.

Main may get another Aberdeen chance against Rijeka

It was the typical Main performance against St Mirren. He gets through a power of running and tries to hassle the defence. Ultimately though, he doesn’t contribute much going forward.

He had one goal chopped off for offside. A goal for him in this clash would have been brilliant, havng only scored four in the league for Motherwell last term.

Main’s work ethic can’t be questioned but it already looks like he won’t be the man Aberdeen turn to for goals often.

This was Main’s chance to show why he should be involved more regularly with the Dons, and he didn’t make much of it.

Aberdeen boss McInnes has confirmed to the club’s website that Sam Cosgrove may miss the crucial Europa League tie with Rijeka. It may just give Main another chance to prove he can shine for Aberdeen.

It will be a much tougher task for him against the Croatians. Even Cosgrove struggled to make a dent in the Rijeka armour, so Main may literally need the best game of his professional career to make an impact.

He’ll be disappointed with his St Mirren outing, but Main may have a chance to make himself  a Dons hero come Thursday night.
