Ian McCall has praised his Ayr United side despite their 3-2 defeat to Ross County in a crucial promotion clash.
Ayr twice came from behind in the game, but the defeat leaves them eight points behind the Championship leaders.
Despite the loss, McCall was delighted with the way his team performed on the night.
“I’m unbelievably proud of them” he told BBC Sport.
“We are up at the top of this league and we are playing against teams who are maybe better suited to it.”
Ayr are currently in third place in the Championship table. Trailing not only Ross County but second placed Dundee United by three points.
They started the season off like a house on fire, thanks to the goals of Lawrence Shankland, which put them clear at the top of the league.
But an injury to Shankland coupled with a run of poor results means that the Honest Men might have to settle for a place in the Championship play-offs.
That would still represent an excellent season for a team who only won promotion from League One last season.
Should Shankland leave in the summer, Ayr will probably find it difficult to repeat their results of this season. But so far, it has been an exceptional season for Ayr and McCall is correct to be proud of his players.
