Sean Clare has taken up a new permanent position in midfield this term it seems for Hearts. On the basis of his recent League Cup outing, that’s a good thing for the Jambos.

According to Transfermarkt, the ex-Sheffield Wednesday kid played in five separate positions for Craig Levein last season.

This season though he looks set for a regular spot in the Heart engine room.

Clare has energy to burn in the Hearts midfield

Against Dundee United Clare was everywhere on the park. He covered every blade of grass and made some decent forward runs where possible. He made a few errors in his passing and tackling, but overall, he was ok.

The most recent match against Cowdenbeath though really showed why the 22-year-old has to play in midfield.

His fitness is brilliant for this early in pre-season. He didn’t seem to tire at all at Central Park, despite putting in a very energetic performance.

In this game, his tackling was better and he linked well with the forward line. Clare was looking to get more involved than what he had been against United and his eagerness to impress showed against the Blue Brazil.

Clare’s received a bit of stick from sections of the Hearts support, but there is a promising player in him. Similar performances to the one he put on at Central Park will see him silence any doubters he has in Gorgie.

It was a promising display from Clare in Hearts’ most recent League Cup match. It just goes to show why he should be continually deployed in central midfield.
