Queen’s Park needed a helping hand from Old Firm loanees Luca Connell of Celtic and Rangers’ Jack Thomson to retain top spot in League One after a thrilling comeback win over Peterhead at Firhill yesterday saw them end up extending their lead at the top.

The Spiders took the lead early on through Tom Robson before two quickfire goals through Hamish Ritchie and Derek Lyle had the Blue Toon ahead and looking like taking the three points back north.

Celtic kid Connell was first to strike, firing home from distance soon after coming off the bench for Laurie Ellis’ side before Rangers youngster Thomson struck the winner with ten minutes remaining.

Connell made a big impression at Queen’s Park last season before returning on loan this season, scoring three times and contributing five assists in eleven appearances last season.

The Irishman has been tipped for a big future at Celtic but has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Parkhead side since his move from Bolton Wanderers three years ago.

Rangers starlet Thomson has spent time on loan with the likes of Clyde and Orange County SC after an injury-hit few years but will be hoping to perform consistently for Queen’s Park.

The former Scotland youth international has made ten appearances for the Spiders so far as he looks to help them secure back-to-back promotions after ditching their long-standing amateur status and turning professional.

With closest rivals Dumbarton drawing with Alloa yesterday, that has allowed Ellis’ side to go two points clear at the top of the table having started the day leading on goal difference.
