St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin was left raving about an “incredible” performance from his Buddies side to claim a 0-0 draw against Celtic last night – with the Saints boss saving a ‘special’ mention for his teenage debutants as Covid ravaged his squad.
Kieran Offord, Dylan Reid and Jay Henderson all got some game-time while the bench was full of kids, some of whom only met the rest of the squad for the first time 90 minutes before kick-off.
Goodwin was delighted with how his side applied themselves and frustrated Celtic as Ange Postecoglou’s men lost ground in the title race.
It was an incredible performance from the team”, raved Goodwin.
“Every single one of them that went across the park gave everything for the jersey and came out fighting when it felt as if the whole world was against us.
“The kids deserve a special mention, there’s no doubt about it.
“We introduced half-a-dozen young lads to the group an hour and a half before kick-off. Some of them hadn’t even met any of the senior players before so that was the kind of situation that we found ourselves in.
“You’re right to mention the senior players, I think they deserve real credit. Tonight was about leadership and characters and togetherness and I thought we saw that in abundance.”
St Mirren now prepare for a trip to Ibrox on Boxing Day to face Rangers as they continue to struggle with positive Covid cases at the club.
With the winter break moved forward by a week, the Buddies will be hoping they can get something at Ibrox and get into the break without losing.
