A late Tony Watt strike sealed a 1-1 Scottish Premiership draw on the road for Motherwell at St Johnstone.

Stephen O’Donnell’s own goal put the McDiarmid Park side ahead in the first half before Watt struck 10 minutes from time. Saints goalkeeper Zander Clark made numerous saves to ensure Motherwell only scored the one goal in Perth.

St Johnstone and Motherwell are still searching for their first three points of the season, sitting on two points and one point respectively after two games. Galatasaray travel to McDiarmid Park on Thursday for the return leg of a third round Europa League qualifier as St Johnstone look to stun the Turkish giants and reach the play-off round.

The tie stands at 1-1 after the first leg in Istanbul. St Johnstone were missing captain Jason Kerr through injury in this match and Motherwell created several chances to score, Bevis Mugabi hitting the post.

But the home team could have scored more too if it was not for Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly, who like Clark at the other end, was in good form. Here are three things we learned.

Clarke’s eye

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke was in attendance at this game and he would have had a keen eye on a few players. His number one right-back O’Donnell captained Motherwell while both goalkeepers showed they are more than capable of reaching international level.

Speaking of Clark…

St Johnstone’s goalkeeper was a man on a mission in Perth. He made four or five superb saves to keep Motherwell at bay, ‘Well manager Graham Alexander acknowledging his display at full-time. His save from Kaiyne Woolery’s first-half header was stunning.

Watt impact

Connor Shields was a surprise inclusion in the Motherwell XI. He was ruled out with injury pre-match but went straight in from the start to make his ‘Well debut. He replaced Watt, but the forward rose from the bench to prove his worth, volleying with precision and power to seal a Motherwell point.
