Partick Thistle fought back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 away to Stenhousemuir in the second Premier Sports Cup group stage match for both teams.
Thomas Orr converted a first-half penalty to put the cinch League Two hosts ahead at the interval but strikers Brian Graham and Zak Rudden netted to ensure Ian McCall’s team avoided a shock. Stenhousemuir and Thistle are joint-third in Group H.
After a very strong opening 10 minutes for the home side, they eventually had to turn in a good defensive display as Thistle grew into the game. Orr’s penalty on the half-hour mark had Stenhousemuir ahead at half-time. Championship quality eventually shone through.
Graham and Rudden would do the damage. Great play down the left-hand side from half-time substitute Scott Tiffoney managed to assist Rudden for his goal, while Richard Foster found Graham at the back-post for his. Here are three things we learned.
All game, Sean Crighton, Nicky Jamieson, and Nat Wedderburn won everything that came near them. Wedderburn in particular had an extremely impressive game in the middle of the park, winning tackles and starting the transition to attack multiple times throughout the game.
Thistle on the wing
The majority of Thistle’s best chances all came from the wings. Connor Murray had the most joy down the left-hand side, managing to create multiple chances. Both goals also came after brilliant play down the same side, creating two easy finishes for Thistle. Tiffoney really seemed to up the intensity for McCall’s side.
Thistle could have had the game wrapped up inside the first half. They threw plenty at Stenhousemuir and straight after they went 1-0 down, Kyle Turner struck the post from outside the box. If Thistle can create regular chances like they did for Graham and Rudden in this match, they will definitely be a force in the Championship this season.
