He’s living life in Italy now – but Hearts could have sold Aaron Hickey to Celtic had the deal been right for all parties last summer.
The versatile full-back burst onto the scene at Hearts under Craig Levein, making his debut aged 16 against Celtic on the final day of the 2018/19 season before starting in the Scottish Cup final a week later.
He continued to shine throughout the 2019/20 season before securing a move to Serie A Bologna for seven-figures. Celtic did table a deal to Hickey but he insists it wasn’t the right time for such a move.
Currently injured due to a dislocated shoulder, Hickey is targeting a return to football in Bologna’s upcoming pre-season, opening up on his potential move (Herald): “Celtic came in a lot and I was excited and happy about it. I don’t know if it was the right option for me, though, because of the deal or something.
“I’m a Celtic supporter and it was massive for me, but I just didn’t think it was the right time to go there. I wouldn’t ever rule it out down the line, who knows. At some point I’ll have to get surgery and I think it’s two-and-a-half months out after that. I don’t really want to miss pre-season so hopefully I don’t have to get it any time soon.”
