Aberdeen expected XI vs Celtic as Jimmy Thelin targets monumental win

The unthinkable could happen on Saturday afternoon as Aberdeen visit Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Jimmy Thelin has already worked wonders at the Dons given how poor they were last season and is gaining deserved plaudits across the country – and even Europe.

That’s because Aberdeen are the only side in the continent’s top 50 ranked countries to have won every match they’ve played this campaign.

But what would be more impressive than that feat is going to the home of the champions and toppling them to spark a genuine Aberdeen title challenge into life.

The majority of Scottish football will be behind the Dons no doubt and a victory would shake up the norm of a two-horse Old Firm race – or more accurately, a one-horse race in recent years.

But we can’t get ahead of ourselves. Celtic have been dominant this season bar one major blip in the Champions League and they rarely drop points in Glasgow.

Aberdeen can, however, pose a threat and their confidence built up over the last few weeks will be a factor in that.

So how will Thelin line up at Parkhead? Here’s Not The Old Firm’s predicted Aberdeen XI for the big clash against the Hoops.

GK – Dimitar Mitov

The Aberdeen stopper has been a shrewd signing from St Johnstone and will keep his place between the sticks.

LB – Jack MacKenzie

He may not have earned a cap for Scotland against either Croatia or Portugal but the marauding Aberdeen full-back has been impressive this season.

CB – Gavin Molloy

The man signed from Shelbourne probably wasn’t recruited as a first-team starter but he’s earned his regular spot at the back with some sold performances.

CB – Slobodan Rubezic

Rubezic is a no-nonsense defender and could be crucial in keeping the likes of Kyogo and Adam Idah quiet on Saturday.

RB – Nicky Devlin

Unlike MacKenzie, Devlin did manage his Scotland debut during the week and he’ll take that high into his game against Celtic. He will have Daizen Maeda to contend with, however.

CM – Graeme Shinnie

The captain and leader of this team, Shinnie will be the driving force in the middle of the park.

CM – Sivert Heltne Nilsen

Nilsen will likely partner Shinnie in midfield although Ante Palaversa may be in with a shout in the eyes of Jimmy Thelin.

CAM – Leighton Clarkson

The former Liverpool kid has found his way back into the fold in recent weeks due to Pape Habib Gueye’s long-term injury. His creativity will be key for Aberdeen.

LW – Jamie McGrath

The Irishman is a classy player and already has two goals and four assists to his name in the Premiership.

RW – Topi Keskinen

Aberdeen’s £1m Finnish winger has real quality. He featured for Finland twice during the international break.

ST – Kevin Nisbet

With Gueye crocked, there’s no doubt Thelin will pick Nisbet to lead the line against Celtic.
