Luke McCormick has swapped Chelsea for English League One club AFC Wimbledon, amid reports the midfielder was a target for Motherwell.
AFC Wimbledon fended off interest from several other clubs to the signature of the Chelsea youth product. McCormick made his way through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and captained youth teams in the academy system, but the closest he got to the first-team was pre-season friendly minutes last term.
He spent last season with Bristol Rovers and his form there was said to have made him a Motherwell transfer target. But McCormick has opted to stay in England with AFC Wimbledon, leaving Chelsea on a permanent transfer.
Head coach Mark Robinson said: “Our recruitment team put together a list of names before the season was finished, so that I could watch the clips, and Luke was top of the list. He was my main target in that position, so I presented to Luke five or six weeks ago.
“It felt like the right thing to do because you get in early and the presentation went really well. I absolutely loved him as a lad and everything that he is about, but football is football and there was loads of interest, and you kind of wonder if you are going to get your man. I’m so chuffed that he has come. We had to be patient.”
