Former Greenock Morton manager Anton McElhone has been appointed as Head of Sport Science at Scottish Premiership club Celtic.
McElhone replaces Jack Nayler, who left Celtic in June to join German side RB Leipzig. It’s McElhone’s first job since leaving his short stint as head coach at Morton last season.

Gus MacPherson replaced McElhone as boss after the newly-appointed Celtic figure took over on an interim basis. It appeared as if McElhone was going to have the chance to lead Morton until the end of last season, fighting for Scottish Championship survival. He vacated the manager’s role in March with the club sixth in the Championship.
McElhone now moves on to Celtic. He worked for Tottenham Hotspur for almost 10 years as Academy and first-team fitness coach before becoming assistant manager at New England Revolution in January 2018. McElhone moved to Bradford City and Morton with David Hopkin, who he replaced as manager at the Ton on an interim basis.
MacPherson’s Morton side lost 1-0 to Raith Rovers on Saturday as they slipped to eighth in the Championship. MacPherson said: “I am repeating myself. The Championship is unforgiving. We created some good chances and we didn’t take them. It comes back to bite you. It’s frustrating as the fans could see we were dominating.”
