Aston Villa manager Dean Smith says that the Villans are looking to build around the likes of Scotland international John McGinn.
The midfielder, a key player in Steve Clarke’s national team plans, has signed a new long-term deal with Aston Villa until 2025. He has been a mainstay in Smith’s side since his arrival in 2018.

McGinn has helped Aston Villa earn promotion from the Championship and then retain their status in the Premier League. He joins Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings in signing new long-term deals.
It’s a nice boost for the former Hibs man, who also has Euro 2020 to look forward to next year after Scotland’s qualification next year. Smith says that McGinn is a key part of his plans, short and long-term.
“Everyone knows what I think of John McGinn,” Smith said. “He’s been exceptional since he’s moved to Aston Villa. He was player of the season in the season we got promoted and started the first Premier League season excellently.

“Unfortunately he’s had a bad injury and we’ve had to get him back to fitness. I think at the start of this season he’s shown what he’s about and certainly warranted a new contract.
“He’s one of the players at this football club that we feel we can build a bright future with. The likes of him, Tyrone Mings, Jack Grealish, Emi Martinez, Ollie Watkins, Matt Cash – good-aged footballers but players who can get better and better.”
