Ayr United chairman David Smith says he couldn’t stand in the way of Cammy Smith as he heads to America.

The former Aberdeen and Dundee United man has scored six goals with two assists for the Honest Men this season and leaves one month earlier than planned to complete a move to the USA.

Chairman Smith said: “Cammy came to me over a month ago to explain his situation. The plan was to sign for a club in America when our season ends but due to COVID-19, quarantines, visas etc he would need to go a month earlier than planned.

“Cammy is moving to America to start a new life over there and we would never stand in the way of that. He agreed that he would do everything he possibly could in the 5 or 6 games he had left and he has certainly done that. We thank him for his efforts and wish him all the very best in the States.”

The former Aberdeen man himself has plenty of kind words for the Honest Men, who he was more than willing to turn out for until the end of the Scottish Championship season: “It is very frustrating because I signed to the end of the season and until fairly recently there was never a doubt about that.

“I need to go to Poland to sort Visa’s and between here, there and America there are various quarantines which we need to follow. I spoke to the Chairman and he was brilliant about it, he told me to give everything I possibly could and I feel I have done that.

“I want to thank the Club for everything they have done for me and I will be watching keenly to the end of the season as there has been a boost with the new manager coming in and I think we could end the season really strongly.”

In his place comes Josh Todd, the midfielder arriving on loan from League One side Falkirk. Manager David Hopkin says it was key to find a replacement for Smith: “It was important with Cammy leaving that we tried to get someone in that has experience at this level and Josh certainly has that.”
