Scotland prospect Billy Gilmour has taken another step on his return from injury with a competitive appearance for Chelsea U21s.
After 11 first-team outings for Chelsea last term, Gilmour established himself as one of the brightest prospects at Stamford Bridge. But he suffered a blow in July, tearing his meniscus.

He’s been battling for fitness since, making a short return to action for Scotland U21s last week. But a harsh red card ended his international involvement, allowing him to appear for Chelsea U21s on Wednesday.
Gilmour started the match in the Papa John’s Trophy as Chelsea exited the competition in a 4-3 thriller against Bristol Rovers.
Brandon Hanlan opened the scoring for Rovers before Tino Anjorin levelled. Former Hearts man Sam Nicholson put the home team ahead to cap off a turbulent 15 minutes.

There would be further drama, Zain Westbrooke doubling the lead before Anjorin and Marcel Lewis levelled again. But a late goal from Josh Hare sent the young Blues out the cup.
For Gilmour, it’s another step on his road to a senior return.
