Dundee United head coach Thomas Courts has been left ‘excited’ by the signing of former Celtic and Scotland centre-back Charlie Mulgrew.

Mulgrew won five Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic earlier in his career while also featuring regularly for the national team. The 35-year-old joins Dundee United on a two-year deal following a five-year stint with English Championship club Blackburn Rovers.

The defender also spent a loan spell at Dundee United from Celtic back in 2006. He is new head coach Courts’ first signing in the Tannadice hotseat, who said of the capture: “I’m excited to have a player of Charlie’s winning pedigree available to me for the next two years.

“I believe that he joins an existing group of senior players who already give everything to make Dundee United better on the pitch. Charlie is renowned for his leadership and impact on young players which is something that will be valuable in their development.”
