Billy Gilmour has had a 2020 full of ups and downs – but the Chelsea starlet is hoping to create more memories like he did against Liverpool in 2021.
The Chelsea and Scotland teenager has burst onto the scene at senior level, making 11 appearances at Stamford Bridge last term. His most dazzling was an FA Cup display over would-be Premier League champions Liverpool.
He shone in midfield as the Blues secured cup progression, eventually reaching the latter stages before Arsenal were the ones to go on and lift the trophy. 2020 wasn’t all rosy for Gilmour though.
He suffered a torn meniscus in July, ruling him out for the last part of last term and the start of this campaign, only returning as 2020 came to a close. But now he’s targeting a big 2021 with trophies at Chelsea too.
“My favourite performance during 2020 was against Liverpool,” said Gilmour. “I enjoyed that one the most. But the biggest challenge of 2020 was my injury. That was a difficult period for me but I am getting stronger.
“In 2021, we as a team are looking to win trophies. We have all got the winning mentality at Chelsea and hopefully we can give the fans at home something to cheer about.”
Gilmour will be looking to do this at Stamford Bridge and not elsewhere. Rumours have circulated in recent weeks that a loan move could beckon for him as Chelsea aim to get him regular minutes.
But manager Frank Lampard looks set to keep him in London in the meantime, seeing the Scottish teenager as a valuable part of his squad, although he is aware Gilmour needs to play in order to boost his chances of going to Euro 2020 with Scotland next summer.
