Chelsea boss Frank Lampard and singing the praises of Scotland starlet Billy Gilmour – where have we heard that before?

The Scotland talent is on the injury comeback trail after tearing his meniscus on Chelsea duty during the summer. He’s not played senior football since then but strides have been made towards a return.

Gilmour briefly featured for the Scotland U21s earlier this month before making his return to youth level for Chelsea in U20s and U23s competition.

His latest involvement came in a 2-2- youth draw with Manchester City, in which he scored a peach from outside the box.

Last season, Lampard sung Gilmour’s praises plenty of times as he made 11 senior appearances for Chelsea. Now on the verge of a first-team return, the Blues boss insists he’ll be big in his plans.

“He made great strides in a short time last year,” said Lampard. “I was very confident with putting Billy in for a big part of the season, from his training and then when the time came.

“I possibly held him back slightly at times looking back. He put in some really good performances before his injury.

“We must put some context on it that he is still a young player and we have good competition in the squad in that area.

“I have absolute faith in Billy that he is going to be a big player for us for a long time to come.”
