The teenage midfielder broke into the Chelsea first team last season under Frank Lampard, making 11 appearances. But after battling back from a torn meniscus, he has made just six appearances this term.
He has shone in each showing but now a new man is in the Chelsea dugout, Thomas Tuchel. The German has not included Gilmour on any of his Premier League benches yet as chances look slim.
Last week it was rumored that Gilmour had asked for a loan move away from Chelsea to help fuel his Euro 2020 ambitions with Scotland this summer and now a club has been linked with talks, Premier League rivals Southampton. Talks are said to be underway in order to complete a deadline day loan move to the end of the season.
The Saints are just four points behind the Stamford Bridge club in the Premier League with a game in hand. Gilmour is yet to be capped at senior level by Steve Clarke, however, a consistent run of matches in England’s top flight would boost his chances of going to Scotland’s first major tournament in 23 years.
