Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has challenged Scotland starlet Billy Gilmour after another positive performance for the Blues.
The midfielder was arguably Man of the Match as Chelsea rotated the squad to edge past Barnsley in the FA Cup. A spot on the bench likely awaits Gilmour though when Tuchel picks his team to face Newcastle United.
Tuchel says he needs quality like Gilmour in his Chelsea squad after rumours persisted the teenager could leave London on loan: “To have a fourth guy like Billy Gilmour is absolutely necessary at this kind of level. We need exactly this kind of quality and I am not worried about the management.
“That means everybody is on board and available if we have difficult decisions to make then it is good, we have difficult decisions to make, it is my job to manage them and it is my job to trust also the guys from the bench.
“It is impossible to achieve our goals with only 12 or 13 players, it is simply not possible. As a player, he has a lot of qualities He is very self-confident in our training games, is very strong on the ball, is a very strong passer, and is very smart in finding positions.
“He has all abilities, and a physical ability, to play for us in the first team. We have a strong midfield and he is clearly, right now, one of four players for central midfield. I wanted him to stay [in January] because he has a big impact in training games and his quality is obvious. We are happy to have him.”
