Talks are set to begin between both parties, with City seemingly about to beat rivals Liverpool to 16-year-old Smith’s signature.
Should any deal go through, Killie will be due around 200,000 euros in compensation under FIFA rules.
It’s claimed by the report though that they are desperate to keep him, as they value him much higher than that price.
Kilmarnock can’t begrudge a Manchester City move for Smith
Smith would obviously be more likely to play senior football with Kilmarnock than Manchester City in the coming years. Perhaps that temptation is something the Rugby Park side could use to try and keep him.
It seems like the winger is destined for big things. With teams like City and Liverpool reportedly keen on him, Smith must have something about him.
The club he’s currently at can’t begrudge him though if he does opt for Manchester. Sure, the chances of getting into the senior side are slim, but it’s a massive opportunity.
He would learn some invaluable skills travelling to play with arguably the world’s best side at the moment. The Citizens have world class facilities that would only aid Smith’s development, even if he was just sat in the academy.
Kilmarnock may be able to persuade him to stay with the promise of senior football in the near future. If Smith wants the challenge though, nobody should stand in the way of a potentially life changing move for him.
