Dundee United manager Thomas Courts admits he was “tempted” to throw new signing Tony Watt into the starting XI for the midweek defeat by St. Mirren but thinks it would have been “difficult” to make changes to his starting XI after the move came out of nowhere.
Watt came off the bench in the second half to make his debut for the Terrors as they tasted defeat in their first game of 2022, and Courts confessed that a busy day of media for the striker after his move was confirmed made it hard to start him.
While the Buddies hit the net just minutes after Watt came off the bench, Courts was happy with the former Motherwell star’s contribution in his debut.
“I was tempted to start Tony Watt but the move happened so quickly that I wasn’t sure,” confessed Courts [Courier].
“He did his media stuff up at the ground and it was a busy day for him. It’s not ideal preparation.
“Quite frankly, I wasn’t sure that the deal was actually going to happen.
“If I had confidence that the deal was going through, I’d have left a window for him to start.
“But the deal came out of the blue and by that time I’d already told the players the team. It would have been very difficult to change it then.
“Ironically, we lost a goal two minutes after he came on the pitch but we saw the difference he’ll make after that.”
